After a solid day or week of work, nothing beats the happiness boosting sensation of relaxing and unwinding with a favourite hobby. Have you ever stopped and wondered if hobbies were good for you? Thankfully, we have some answers. In 2010, researchers from three universities conducted a study and discovered that YES, hobbies were good for the wellbeing. It lowers stress, leads to better physical and mental health, helps with sleep, and of course, increases happiness, especially when done with others.
The Ebb & Flow of Hobbies
So when a pandemic strides its way into town, forcing many to stay and work from home, hobbies and interests become important for helping people cope with isolation but also to help ensure people are not bored enough to break stay-at-home rules. Oh boy, did Canadians ever flock to hobbies!
Remember the flour shortage? A large part of that was an explosion in interest in learning how to bake, trying recipes, and, of course, creating sourdough starters. When sports and movie theatres were closed, there was an epic surge towards video game consumption. Then there were home workouts, which erupted fitness equipment to over 500% in sales for 2020 and left many on waitlists, hoping to get some resistance bands or chin-up bars.
Since we are all stuck at home, our hobbies now consume a larger portion of our time. The downside of this, there is a chance of developing a hobby burnout. This feeling of boredom, exhaustion, or apathy towards our favourite hobbies can be a result of developing a sense of perfectionism and thus making our hobbies seem like work. This leads to developing a burnout similar to it’s work-related counterpart. These components being overwhelming exhaustion, cynicism and detachment, and a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment.
How can brands help to reinvigorate hobby time?
A simple solution is by providing end users with new stimuli for a hobby, regardless of if it is a hobby they already enjoy. A hobby artist burnout from painting may draw new inspiration and be reinvigorated to paint after successfully putting together a piece of promo origami or colouring up a book.
